A recent article published by The Guardian reports a surge in the number of homebuyers craving countryside living by looking to move out of cities and into smaller rural towns following the success of working from home, which looks to be here to stay.

With people reassessing what is important to them, Savills conducted a survey during April of nearly 700 registered buyers and sellers to find out how their attitudes to moving have changed during the coronavirus outbreake. Data collected showed that 49% expected increased home working to continue post-lockdown. Alongside this, four out of ten people said they now find village or countryside living more appealing than ever before.

In addition, Savills reported a rise in buyer registrations in more rural areas including Hampshire and Dorset. Andrew Perratt, the head of country residential at Savills, said the big demand was for properties in “the country markets around the major cities,” which included villages and market towns.

The mass switch to working from home had proved that “you don’t need to be in London, or another city, five days a week,” he said. “I think there are lessons to be learned for all of us in terms of the number of times we need to visit a city during a working week.”

The research also found that one in six were willing to commute further for a better work life balance with some prepared to put up with a two-hour journey to work if they were only going into the office for a couple of days a week.

Despite the current restrictions, Rightmove has revealed a 20% increase in visits to their website during the last three days of April compared to the first few days of lockdown. This supports what we have found from talking to prospective buyers that many are using this time to do their research so they can hit the ground running when the restrictions are lifted in the not too distant future!

With new home developments across Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset, Pennyfarthing Homes are sure to have the right new home for you in a stunning rural location with brilliant commuter links for the ideal work life balance for you and your family.
